When a bookcase is converted to a hutch, we remove the bottom and add a fixed shelf for stability. The fixed shelf can be placed at any height, but on wide bookcases (over 42"W), we do not put any adjustable shelves underneath, so make the fixed shelf low enough to be the bottom shelf (around 12-16"H).
