Finishing Process:

AWB’s 10-Step Process for Staining and Painting

1. Preparation: Stain & Paint

  • Fill all brad & staple Holes
  • Flat pieces sanded with a Random Orbital Sander. The best sanders on the market are used. They have HEPA filtration to protect environment and workers
  • The rest of the unit is meticulously hand sanded making sure to break all sharp edges
  • Thorough inspection for prior to finishing
  • If anything is found it is rectified at this point prior to staining or Priming
  • Everything is sanded to 150 grit

2. Staining or Painting:

Stain:

  • All stains are applied by hand. This allows the stain to be better absorbed by the wood rather than sitting on the surface which can happen when the stain is sprayed on. This hand staining process produces a richer more enhanced color because of the stains ability to soak into the pores of the wood.
  • The stain is applied using high grade Cheese Cloth.
  • The stain is wiped off using brand new 100% white cotton rags. Colored rags are not used because the dye from the rag color can interact and affect stain color.

Primer: Paint

  • Two coats of Post-Catalyzed Primer are now applied.
  • This high grade primer is used to seal the wood and provides a durable layer of protection to the wood and provides a strong foundation for the top coats. Priming ensures better adhesion of paint to the surface, increases paint durability, and provides additional protection for the material being painted.
  • White primer for white finish and antique white finish, black primer for black finish

3. Drying: Stain & Paint

  • The Stain or Primer is allowed to dry thoroughly

4. Sealer: Stain

  • Two coats of Post-Catalyzed Sealer are now applied.
  • This high grade sealer is used to seal in the color and provides a durable layer of protection to the wood and provides a strong foundation for the top coats.
  • These two coats are applied simultaneously in what is called a Box-Coat. The second coat is applied perpendicular to the first coat for maximum coverage.

5. Drying: Stain

  • The Sealer is allowed to dry thoroughly

6. Inspection & Sanding: Stain & Paint

  • A thorough physical inspection is preformed at this time
  • Any blemishes or defects are addressed at this time and rectified.
  • The entire unit is now hand sanded using 320 grit sandpaper

7. Top Coat:

Top Coat Stain:

  • Two coats of #20 Sheen Post-Catalyzed Lacquer are now applied.
  • These two coats are applied simultaneously in what is called a Box-Coat. The second coat is applied perpendicular to the first coat for maximum coverage.
  • Both top coats are color enhanced using fine European dyes to provide an even, vibrant and rich final color.

Top Coat Paint:

  • Two coats of #20 Sheen Post-Catalyzed pigmented Lacquer are now applied.
  • These two coats are applied simultaneously in what is called a Box-Coat. The second coat is applied perpendicular to the first coat for maximum coverage.

8. Drying: Stain & Paint

  • The Top Coat is allowed to dry thoroughly

9. Final Inspection: Stain & Paint

  • A thorough final physical inspection is preformed

10. Packaging: Stain & Paint

  • Foam, cardboard corners and corrugated cardboard held in place with shrink wrap

General Notes:

All coatings are strained prior to application using paper strainers. There are also in-line micro filters on all spray equipment to remove any and all residual debris. This allows for a fine, smooth layer to be sprayed.

Everything is sprayed using triple filtered, chilled, dried clean air. This provides optimal smoothness.

All coatings meet or exceed KCMA requirements.

All Stains are oil based and contain anti-blotching agents to provide an even and consistent finish color.

Post-Catalyzed Lacquer is the superior choice for interior cabinetry and furniture. It delivers exceptional flow and predictable results. Provides a clear, hard, high solids film build with excellent sanding properties. It has enhanced durability and mar resistance properties as well as greater resistance to water, alcohol, food acids, commercial maintenance / cleaning products and household cleaning products than those of Pre Catalyzed Lacquers. Adds longevity to the finish. Contains UV inhibitors which allow your color to stay true for much longer time periods.
